Just more Biblical hypocrisy.

My favorite story is in Numbers where, after Moses has already given the Hebrews the 10 Commandments which include "thou shalt not kill", he then (on Yahweh the sky bully's orders of course) sends his army to destroy the Midianites. Then his army comes back and they're like "okay, we killed all the men", and Moses is all pissed off because he's like "only the men?!?" and sends them back to finish the rest of the women and children, although they did get to keep the virgins as spoils of war. How generous of you Moses.

I was partly moved to draw this because some anti-abortion nuts came to our campus with all these Bible signs and shit, and I informed them that abortion never once appears anywhere in the Bible, and they were like "yeah huh, 'cuz it says ending a human life is always wrong, IN ANY CASE".

So then I asked "really? Then what are you guys doing to protest the war in Iraq?"

And of course I was met with a stupid, confused silence.

Then they left.

This has always been one of my particular favourite. Under the category of bible things that scared to hell out of me.

What all those religious conservatives and fundementalists don't understand is that Moses, the Apolstles, and every other important phophet/evangelist were human at their very core. And all humans make mistakes (sin), regardless of if they're God's spokesperson. Even they disobeyed their devine father's orders.

Gah, the old testament is often difficult to understand. And when you misunderstand it.. you become just like the hypocritical anti-abortionists that you mentioned. That is: a hypocrite.

^Made so many mistakes in the orginal post that I decided to hide it and repost.

What all those religious conservatives and fundementalists don't understand is that Moses, Abraham, the Apostles, and every other important phophet/evangelist was human at their very core. And all humans make mistakes (sin), even if they're God's spokesperson. Even they disobeyed their devine father's orders.

Gah, the old testament is often difficult to understand. And when you misunderstand it, you can become just like the hypocritical anti-abortionists that you mentioned. Plus, many Christians who are anti-homosexual find their "evidence" fo discriminating against gays in the Old Testament.

Sorry for the little rant. ^^;

Actually, quite a few Christians do acknowledge the failings of Moses and the other Biblical figures. They actually use it to make their point: that human beings are deeply, inherently flawed (the fall, or original sin), and that coming to know Christ is the only means of salvation.

The problem (other than the claim that their religion is the only "true" one) is their low estimation of human nature. Whereas they think humans are inherently disgusting and sinful, I happen to think that's a matter of perspective and the choices we make. Most of the time, it's the people telling everyone the world is a bad place that are the ones actually making it a bad place.

The other problem of course is this "we're all sinners" mentality, which many times leads to the incredibly stupid statement "all sins are equal". That's bullshit. My sexual orientation is not a sin, nor is my love for my fiance. But many Christians would equate me with murderers and thieves without batting an eye.

And of course even when they admit that everyone's human and they are sinners too, they aren't actively passing laws against the "sins" of straight and/or Christian Americans. They never point that accusing finger at themselves. So it's just a bunch of hypocrisy.

Essentially the entire philosophy of "sin" is incredibly fucked up on many different levels. That's my official academic assessment of the situation.

"Beliefs that lesbian and gay adults are not fit parents likewise have no empirical foundation."

I wholly agree with you on that. Perspective has a lot to do with whether a person's actions are considered "good" or "bad".

And I guess I'm just lucky that I haven't met a lot of people with a "all sins are equal" mindset. I personaly disagree with it (like how is making a white lie just as bad as decapitating your children?).

...even when they admit that everyone's human and they are sinners too, they aren't actively passing laws against the "sins" of straight and/or Christian Americans.

I have met numous people in this mindset, though, and I also find it absurd. Though (in the US and elsewhere) people have freedom to practice the religion of our choice, they have no right to make the government force what their religion considers "right" upon everyone else.
