As long as religions preach against homosexuality, gays raised in religious homes will feel shame and self-hatred, and a few will even try to change who they are. The first Ex-Gay ministries appeared in the 1970’s. Having been raised to believe homosexuality was a sin, and desperately seeking love and salvation, they came to believe that if they prayed and pretended to be straight, God would “reward” their faith by changing their orientations.

The methods ex-gays use to try and “cure” homosexuality range from silly to absurd. Prayer is certainly part of it, but they have also adopted the ideas of the Pseudoscientist. Not surprisingly, it doesn’t work. No evidence supports the claims of Ex-Gays and they have been discredited by every reputable medical and mental health organization in the country. The movement would have died out were it not for the support it receives from powerful anti-gay organizations like Focus on the Family, who use them to argue against equality for all gays and lesbians.

Luckily many escape the movement and go on to lead normal lives, including the two men who helped found the largest Ex-Gay organization, Exodus International; they denounced the movement after they “failed” to become heterosexual and fell in love with each other instead. Others aren’t so lucky. Some keep up the charade for years, even serving as spokespeople paid to promote their newfound “freedom from homosexuality” - until they’re busted while cruising for gay sex in seedy bars and back alleys. Still others, finding they cannot change no matter how hard they try, blame themselves and commit suicide.

In recent years they have gotten clever in their marketing campaigns. Nowadays it is rare for an Ex-Gay to explicitly promise a transformation from homosexuality to heterosexuality – that is, to explicitly lie. More often they use vague descriptions like “leaving the homosexual lifestyle”, which really just means voluntarily going back in the closet.

The Ex-Gay:
A homosexual who is forced to deny who he/she is just so he can fit in or not be harassed by anti-gay pricks.
Alternatively:
A homosexual who, due to certain circumstances, cannot accept who he/she is and denies it.

well i am a homophobe by your standards, but i agree. all this ex-gay shit is idiotic. either you are a fag and you are fighting it for whole your life (like denial+ homo-celibate), or you embrace the gayness.

There was an incident some time ago when Dr. Robert Spitzer did research on the possibility of gays turning straight. His initial research concluded that it was possible but the chances were EXTREMELY rare and most gays were probably better off not going that root.

James Dobson and his stupid (Focus On The Families we don't like) group scooped Spitzer's work and used it to further the case for ex-gay ministries, an act that Spitzer was not the least bit comfortable with especially since it was him who helped get homosexuality off the list of mental disorders in the 1970s.

Fortunately, there's an upside to this. FOTF spent so much money promoting and supporting Prop-8 in California that they had to downsize and lay off tons of people. Maybe they should focus on their own families and leave others out of their heartless political messages but at least they won't be supporting large-scale anti-gay movements for a while.

If Homosexuality was back in the DSM, could Extra Grant Money fund psychological studies by the APA or NIMH? I don;t mean to be offensive, i am just contemplating.
