Artist's Comments

It's funny, I just meant this to be a Pagan representation of God in that he exists in nature and in the interaction between living things.

But the bigwigs in the graduate art department came through my studio and they all decided it was supposed to be gay. One said he saw it as two "tops" because they're both bucks.

LOL that doesn't make any sense, how could I depict a top and a bottom and make one without antlers?? Then they would just be a male and a female.

I get tired of straight people always assuming our relationships are modeled after theirs.

Well anyway, I don't mind the homoerotic subtext in general, it just wasn't intentional that's all.

I really like how it makes one face... And the idea of god existing that way. *is pagan*. And that is annoying... when you get the most basic "So which one of you is the girl in the relationship?" or something to that degree>.<. Anything along those lines. If we wanted a girl in the relationship, we would have been born straight.

Thanks! I might redo it as a grayscale, with lots more detail and more painterly, for the show I'm in this Thursday. It would resemble the newer Trinity and Totem pieces. I might also add some ducks or something.

Well they're another Wisconsin animal, but mallards have always been special to me. I once heard my neighbors yelling about something outside, yelling "sick!" and "faggots!" and stuff. I thought they were yelling at a human, but no, they were yelling at two male mallards swimming around in the pool at my apartment complex. And I had kind of a revelation, because one guy said something along the lines of "heh, the other ducks are probably all freaked out and want to get the hell out of there".

But he obviously wasn't paying attention, because there were plenty of other ducks swimming about, some with opposite-sex mates swimming near them. They didn't give a shit, they were totally oblivious. The ducks weren't homophobic like us stupid humans.

I later learned that mallards have a high rate of homosexual relationships. On the wikipedia page for homosexuality in animals there's an adorable picture of two male mallards touching their little bills together. Awwwwww...

So yeah, I never thought the Deer God picture was gay, but other people seem to take it that way, so maybe I would put the ducks in at the bottom mimicking the deer heads. And maybe the deer still aren't gay at all, they are just doing something spiritual by putting their heads together and creating the forest god's face - but the ducks are gay, and it could be like their love is just another symbol of togetherness which honors their god, just like any other loving relationship would.

Idunno there's all kinds of b.s. I could make up about it.

i hear that. actually the stags didn't strike me as representing homosexuality at all.

that's a funny story about the mallards, i always used to play with the duck decoys that i used as toys (cause i grew up on a farm/hunting resort and most of my toys were farm or hunting equipment) and i'd always made the mallards be lovers. hah, an early sign, if only somebody had been around to see it.

whatever you do to it, can't wait to see it

Speaking of mallards, my husband just flattened one with his truck on the freeway the other day.

Hope it wasn't a gay one.
